Since 2004, United Communities Against Poverty (UCAP) has managed Shepherd’s Cove Emergency Shelter for women and children in Prince George’s County, Maryland in partnership with the Prince George’s County Department of Social Services.  Our 100–bed emergency facility is operated and monitored 24 hours a day, 365 days a year by caring professionals.  Our case management staff uses the Continuum of Care Model, which helps to effectively coordinate and link clients to resources.  Our primary goal is to provide a clean and safe environment for our residents with the ultimate goal of their obtaining transitional or permanent housing.

Program Services:

  • Three balanced and nutritious meals every day
  • Free fully–equipped day care (for children 6 weeks – 5 years old)
  • After–school program (for children 5 – 12 year old)
  • Permanent & transitional housing assistance
  • Education & employment services
  • Transportation assistance
  • Health care, including mental health and substance–abuse services
  • Evening and weekend recreational, entertainment and social activities

Supportive Social Services:

  • Physical and mental health care assistance
  • Substance abuse counseling
  • Employment assistance (i.e., job training, searching, placement and retention)
  • Education (i.e., GED, Microsoft Certified software instructions, and professional trade skill certifications)
  • Housing (i.e., transitional, permanent and homeownership)
  • Other supportive services as needed and required
